With popularity of football on the rise in India, the country is finally getting some recognition frommany footballing legends across the world. After getting the likes of AlessandroDel Piero,Robert Pires, Marco Materazzi and Zico participate in the inaugural season of the Indian Super League (ISL), football in Indianow seems to have attracted a lot more names towards it.

Though the start on the second season of ISL is still a month away, there is a possibility that India might just get to see the glimpse of Brazilian football legend Pele even before football hits fever pitch.According to Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Societyvice chairman, Air Marshal BBP Sinha (AVSM), there is a possibility that 56-year-old football tournament might get Pele to India for the final clash that will take place on October 16, 2015. Though Subroto Cup’s organizing committee is still holdingtalks with Pele’s managing staff, the group is planning to capitalise on a trend and try to boost up the diminishingpopularity of age-group soccer tournaments.

If talks succeed, Pele will be present in the closing ceremony of the tournament.

Air Marshal Sinha said:

Pele can come for the final on October 16. There are serious talks with concerned people. We will know about it in some time,

The tournament is slatedto beginfromSeptember 11 and will go on till October 16.The reputed annual tournament will have 103 school teams from India and abroad participating in it and the matches would be played under two categories: Under-14 (boys) and Under-17 (boys and girls).

Besides India, many schools from Korea, Sweden, Brazil, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka would also be participating in the tournament.

The tournament organizers hope that once presence of Pele for the final is confirmed, the prestigious tournament willgain more popularity, which will help revive India’soldest and most professionally organised age-group football championship.Air Marshall Sinha said that the organizers were also going all out to raise substantial amount of money to bring the legend to India:

Efforts have been made to bring Pele, but the organising committee would have to raise substantial money to bring the Brazilian legend on a short visit to India,

While Pele’s presence in India is yet to be confirmed, the organizers did take advantage of another Brazilian legend who is currently present in India, Roberto Carlos.Carlos who would be coaching and acting as a marquee-player for the ISL franchise Delhi Dynamos this year, will be kicking off the 56th edition of the SubrotoCup, and would present in Delhi to cheer on the students on September 11.

Delhi Dynamos has this year joined hands with Subroto Cup for promoting the game at the school level. There was also a huge revelation from Air Marshal Sinha about Real Madrid’s under-17 club team showing interest to play in the tournament, but unfortunately the Spanish club was a little late and the organisers had, by that time, already finalised the teams.

Real Madrid approached us to field their Under-17 team but we had finalised the teams till then. We would like to accommodate them if there is any withdrawal,
